Board Reporting on AI Spend: The Numbers That Get Asked

AI is now a board-level line item. The questions directors ask — total spend, trend, margin, forecast — and how to have the numbers ready before the meeting.

AI spend has crossed from an engineering line item into a board-level one. Once it's material to gross margin or burn, directors start asking about it — and the questions are predictable.

The questions you'll be asked

  1. What's total AI spend, and what's the trend? Across every provider, not one dashboard at a time. A single number with a trend line.
  2. Where is it going? By provider and by product or feature. "OpenAI plus Anthropic plus Cursor" isn't enough; they'll want to know which features drive it.
  3. What's the margin impact? As AI becomes part of COGS, the board wants gross margin with AI cost included — and cost per customer for your heaviest accounts.
  4. Where will it land? A forecast, not just actuals. Is this quarter on budget?
  5. Is it under control? Evidence that spikes get caught and acted on, not discovered at invoice time.

Having the answers ready

The mistake is treating board reporting as a one-off scramble — exporting from five dashboards into a slide the night before. The fix is a standing source of truth.

StackSpend's AI spend management gives a combined total with per-provider and per-feature breakdown, AI COGS and cost per customer for the margin question, and forecasting for "where will it land." Anomaly detection is the evidence that spend is controlled. Pull the numbers in minutes, not the night before.

This reporting discipline is the operating layer of AI FinOps.
